Detectives are appealing for information after a woman was attacked by a man with a knife in Castleford.

A 58-year-old woman was walking on Smawthorne Lane at 4.45am yesterday (Friday) morning when she was approached by a man who struck up a conversation with her before attempting to grab her bag.

He then produced a knife and struck her before running off along Vicar Street empty handed.

DC Ricky Scott from Wakefield CID said: “This was a distressing incident for the victim and I am appealing to anyone who can help bring the attacker to justice.”

The man is described as white, of skinny build, about 5ft 4ins and in his 20s.

He wore a black hooded top with pockets at the front, dark bottoms and spoke with a local accent.

The knife had a brown handle.
