England’s cricketers may be toiling as they prepare for their World Cup campaign next year, but Gildersome Cricket Club could have unearthed some stars of the future to ensure that the years to come may not be so gloomy.

The club is celebrating after their under nines team achieved a spectacular double success in the space of a week, winning the Hunslet Nelson Festival Play Off Finals on Bank Holiday Monday before defeating Morley to lift the U9 Tony Larvin Cup on Sunday August 31.

The achievement is made all the more outstanding by the fact that the team was formed only five months ago, to give youngsters at Gildersome Spurs Juniors FC a taste of another sport during the off-season.

Paul Pearson, the team’s coach, said: “The commitment of the kids and the support of their parents has really been phenomenal.

“We couldn’t have written the script of this season if we had tried and the success has been beyond our wildest dreams. Let’s hope they stick together and become the future of Gildersome CC.”
