Morley Cricket Club’s first team ended their six-game run without a win with an unlikely success against fellow Bradford League Premier strugglers East Bierley.
Last season’s Division Two champions were in big trouble at 28-6 with new-ball pairing Matthew Lumb (5-33) and Awaiz Ejaz (3-24) causing havoc with the ball.
However, led by Richard Jubb (32), Luke Heinemann (28) and Nathan Bromby (26), Morley recovered to post 121 at the close of their innings.
The value of those contributions became clear as East Bierley faltered against the spin bowling of Kashif Naveed (4-15) and Dave Nebard (4-27) and were eventually dismissed for just 96.
The result wasn’t enough to lift Morley out of the bottom two but they are now just two points behind Pudsey Congs, who suffered a 12-run defeat against Bradford & Bingley, and East Bierley.
Morley Seconds completed a double against opposition from East Bierley as they celebrated a resounding 109-run triumph in the Second Teams Premier.
George Robson (34) and Ash Daly (30) helped Morley to 150-9, with Robert Barker leading the East Bierley attack with 3-55.
And the Scatcherd Lane team proved outstanding with the ball, sending Bierley packing for only 41 as Rob Lintin-French (4-16) and Ben Jenkinson (3-20) combined in the Morley attack.
Morley’s third team remain five points clear at the top of the Dales Council Cricket League Division C, despite not playing and with a game in hand, after their nearest rivals Drighlington B suffered a nine-wicket defeat at home to Farsley.
Morley firsts host Cleckheaton on Saturday, while Morley seconds visit Yeadon (both 1pm). Morley thirds visit Shipley Providence (1.30pm).
