AUDIENCES will be dancing in the aisles this autumn as Rifco Arts’ popular musical Britain’s Got Bhangra returns to the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Charting the rise of British Bhangra music from the sequin clad 80s through to the R‘n’B fusion of the current charts, the show which enjoyed a hugely successful run last year takes over the Quarry Stage from October 25-29.
This revived production promises a revamped set, edited script and two new songs to add to all the original favourites. With fresh new faces joining the dazzling original cast, starring Shin from DCS, this year’s production promises to keep Yorkshire’s heart pumping to the bhangra beat.
The story revolves around Twinkle, who arrives in a cold UK, fresh from the fields of the Punjab, with a song in his heart and no money in his pocket.
Singing at weddings he becomes a local star and is quickly snapped up by a producer who realises that there is money to be made from bhangra. Taken advantage of, Twinkle becomes a washed-up-has-been; will he ever find his magic again and can his talent shine through or will the remixed bling of the 90s DJ ruin his dreams?
The talented cast includes award-winning performer Shin, the lead singer and driving force behind legendry bhangra band and double platinum disc award-winners DCS, Natasha Jayetileke (The Lion King, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Mahabharata), Sohm Kapila (Coronation Street, Doctors, Silver Street), Rakesh Boury (We Will Rock You), Michael Taibi (Jekyll and Hyde, Annie Get your Gun, Grease, National Theatre and The Globe) and Rina Fatania (Deranged Marriage, Bombay Dreams).
